THEY may not have won since the beginning of the year, or beaten Carmarthen Town in their previous eight clashes, but NEWI Cefn Druids weren't going to let that stand in their way. Although the result looked to be a foregone conclusion, NEWI tasted overdue success by winning 3-1.
The hosts were on the rack early on with Chris Mullock denying Jamal Easter and Paul Fowler, but they did have the game's first clear cut chance, which fell to Karl Connolly but he was denied by Neil Thomas in the Carmarthen goal. But it was Connolly who broke the deadlock in the 35th minute when he met a left wing cross from Mike Thompson to give Thomas no chance. It was the lift NEWI needed and they grew in stature and they deservedly doubled their lead in the 53rd minute when Connolly set free Chris McGinn who fired hard and low under the advancing 'keeper. Soon after, McGinn had a glorious chance to put the game out of reach but he blasted wide when he should have done better.
The visitors pulled themselves back into the match in the 77th minute when Nathan Cotterall and Greg Coombes carved out an opening for Danny Thomas and he made no mistake from just inside the box. They pressed for the leveller but Mullock stood firm.
There was an controversial end to the match. Carmarthen keeper Thomas was harshly adjudged to have impeded Connolly in the third minute of stoppage time and he was dismissed, Connolly converting the penalty. To make matters worse, the visitors also had Kris Thomas sent off after receiving two yellow cards.
