RHYS GRIFFITHS capped a memorable New Year's Day when he blasted a superb hat-trick to maintain Llanelli's title challenge then announced that he had signed a two--year extension to his contract with the Stebonheath Park club.
Rumours of his possible departure to Swiss club FC Aarau will persist, but at least Llanelli will benefit by a substantial fee should the deal go ahead. A season-best crowd of 547, saw the Reds go 2-0 up within 16 minutes and they coasted to a comfortable festive double over their near rivals.
Craig Jones, who was a threat all afternoon with his trickery, opened the scoring in the 10th minute when he cut in from the right and curled a superb shot over the head of stand-in goalkeeper Craig Tennant, in for the suspended Neil Thomas. Jones had a hand in the second, his inch-perfect far-post cross met with a powerful Griffiths header.
It took Llanelli another 56 minutes to breach the Carmarthen defence again, Jones and Craig Williams setting up Griffiths for the third.
Jamal Easter pulled one back for the visitors a minute later and it needed a Gary Lloyd goal-line clearance to prevent Carmarthen reducing the deficit further.
Griffiths completed his hat-trick when he blasted home from close range following Andrew Mumford's free-kick.
